As wedding photographers, we're often one of the first wedding vendors a couple chooses after getting engaged, so we're sharing our top tips for how to start!

Tip #1: Just engaged? Celebrate!

First things first, take time to celebrate after getting engaged! Don't give in to the scarcity mindset that you have to start wedding planning immediately in order to get everything you want. Tell your love story and proposal story to your close family and friends, and write it down so you remember every detail. Cheers to you, because you're about to embark on a beautiful lifetime with your best friend!

Tip #2:  Find a Wedding Designer and Planner

As wedding photographers, we've seen our fair share of wedding days! Hiring a wedding designer and planner who align with the vision you have for your wedding is the best way to enjoy the process and provide an unforgettable experience with the people you love. Your wedding designer and planner will get to know you and your style so they can take care of all the details and logistics to create a purposeful celebration for you and your family and friends.

Tip #3: Consider your Style and the Type of Celebration You Hope to Share with Your Loved Ones

A good wedding designer and planner will get to know you, your personality, and your design values in order to create a personal wedding experience for you and your guests. To get that process rolling, envision how you want to feel during your wedding and reflect on your personal style. Consider how you want your guests to feel and experience the celebration as well.

Tip #4: Book your wedding venue & wedding photographer

Typically, the next step will be to select and secure a wedding venue, wedding photographer, and cinematographer. As wedding photographers in Boise and Chicago, some of our couples find us on their own, and some find us through their wedding planning and design team.

Tip #5: Prepare for Marriage

Once you have your key wedding vendors secured, leave the details and logistics to them and focus on preparing for marriage. While wedding planning is important, your marriage will last a lifetime. A few ways we recommend intentionally planning for marriage leading up to your wedding day are:

Finding a marriage counselor and attending pre-marital counseling

Planning date nights once a week

Having deeper conversations with your closest family and friends about their own marriage reflections and advice

I'm a Co-founder and Lead Photographer at Studio Ostendo.

Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
