Surprise Summer Proposal at Bogus Basin

Photos from a hike turned surprise proposal in the Boise mountains

Boise couples love Bogus Basin ski resort in the winter, but the summer vibes are just as remarkable! With lots to do on the mountain, Bogus Basin is a delightful summer date destination. When a message came through from Nate about proposing to his girlfriend up at Bogus, I couldn’t wait to capture it for them!

Surprise summer proposal with mountaintop views at Bogus

Nate grew up in Boise and the first time he brought Kano to visit, Bogus was one of their most memorable stops. They came in the summer to explore the mountain, taking Deerpoint Chairlift up to a scenic viewpoint to take in the stunning mountaintop views together. So when the time came to propose, Nate knew exactly where he wanted to do it.

Nate and Kano were in town visiting family, and he planned to take Kano hiking up at Bogus and propose in a similar spot to where they had been before. I drove up the mountain and took the chairlift up a little before them to be ready to photograph his sweet surprise so they’d have photographs of the moment to look back on!

Day-of Nate and I had to pivot the plan because Morning Star chairlift was the only lift open that day, but that small hiccup didn’t change the excitement of the events to come. Nate and Kano took the chairlift up, dressed and ready to hike, but instead of starting down the trail, he paused and began talking. He got down on one knee and asked Kano to marry him, with sweeping Boise mountain views behind them. She said yes and was completely surprised! It was so beautiful to watch the moment unfold and capture pictures they’ll have forever!

What I loved most about collaborating with Nate to capture these proposal photos was his perspective about the final result. He wasn’t worried about getting perfect photographs of the proposal moment. He shared with me that he was more interested in having the photographs to look back on and remember—imperfect was great, the memories were more important. Here are some of my favorites:

Tips for planning a surprise proposal or engagement photos at Bogus Basin

If you’re planning your own surprise proposal or engagement photos at Bogus Basin, here are some tips to consider:

  • Consider the weather & time of year. It’s common for temperatures at Bogus to be 10+ degrees cooler than they are in Boise. The Bogus Basin website includes daily updates on mountain conditions when the mountain is open.
  • Check out the website for more information on summer activities and tickets or winter lifts and tickets before you go.
  • Give yourself extra time to get up the mountain. Most of Bogus Basin road is one lane each way, so it can be slow on busy days or when slow traffic or construction is present.
  • Include something personal. As a photographer in Boise, I always recommend prioritizing things that are personal to you over stunning locations. Find a way to incorporate something personal in your engagement photos!
