Should We Do a First Look or Not?

Wedding Photography FAQs

Wedding Photography FAQ: Should we do a first look or not?

Some more traditional couples opt to skip the first look and see each other during the ceremony for the first time. Our answer...YES to the first look!

We love first looks for the logistics and pacing of the day, but also for our couples! And here's why...

When couples choose to do a first look, they spend more time together earlier in the day! Instead of spending the majority of your wedding day avoiding each other and preparing for the ceremony, you spend that time together!

Second, couples who do a first look often get more alone time together. During your first look, we give you time and space to relax and catch up. Want some uninterrupted time together? Do a first look!

Third, first looks help release your nerves. So many couples get nervous for the events that will unfold on their wedding day, and doing a first look helps relieve those nerves sooner.

Finally, doing a first look means you can take photos earlier in the day and actually enjoy your cocktail hour and reception! When couples wait to see each other until the ceremony, we usually try to squeeze in family photos, full wedding party photos, AND couple photos during the cocktail hour. When you do a first look, all those things are done so you can enjoy your company and celebrate together for the rest of the night!

I'm a Co-founder and Lead Photographer at Studio Ostendo.

Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
